Perfect for what it is. If using the lot on a weekend, best to go before noon to get a spot. As you enter, continue to the right and don't go against the flow! Lot is tight, be patient and keep weaving through.
The James River is a gym of Richmond. It's not very well known outside the area. But it's very popular fit mountain biking, hiking, and river activities. Pony pasture is a popular location to put in and out of the James River. This is predominantly flat area of the river before the rapids of the fall line that are located between belle isle and shokoe bottom. There are some smaller rapids and dams with clearly marked portages.

One of the best place in Richmond. You can really enjoy in the water, its very much relaxing to sit in the rocks and it has some real good trails to walk. Only issue is to find a parking space as it will be full always in summer.
The pony pasture itself was located close to a foundry used in the revolutionary and civil wars, and seems to have gotten its name as a location where they kept horses and ponies (of course - or were they mules?) that were involved in the civil war. Thankfully we keep it as a nature reserve now, it has become an essential part of who and what modern Richmond is and does. We go walking on the river paths throughout the year, wade in the River and climb on the rocks as weather permits. Nature walks and Bird watching are prime activities year-round, kayaking and canoeing more in the balmier weather. We wade out to bask in the rocks in the River as soon as summer hits. Teenagers dominate the rocks especially on summer weekends, but regular people get in there too. Kids especially love to wade by the edge of the River and climb the rocks along the edge, closely supervised, or not depending on what they can get away with!
