Floyd County Jail (Rome, Georgia)

The staff never can agree on procedures and they are very egotistical, rude, and uninformative....the food is grade z, health care and concern is bottom priority...the list goes on....#freeMe

* This jail is in a city and that does come with a different attitude from the staff as compared to jails in the more rural jurisdictions, but I find most staff to be pleasant, friendly, and responsive. The jail no longer has blackout periods for visits during the work day which is a vast improvement from the pro visitation policy at the old facility.

* The new facility (finished around 2014) is great! Parking is easy, security rules are reasonable, they now have a well designed full-contact visitation area with adequately private rooms and appropriate safety measures, and occasionally the city's free wifi can be reached just enough to conduct essential business like looking up info in the online court's database.

PROS

Delaware County Jail (Delaware, Ohio)

Pinal County Jail (Florence, Arizona)

* Richmond City Jail (Richmond, Virginia) *

Roanoke City Jail (Roanoke, Virginia) *

One of 15 jails that had death rates more than double the last available national average, which is 135 deaths a year per 100,000 inmates. Here are the top 10, in alphabetical order. 3 are in Virginia.

The delay between requesting an inmate and receiving him or her in the visitation room is incredibly variable, and unquestionably averages far longer than *any* jail I deal with -- and I travel to most ares of the state, including the large jails in Tidewater. If you get your inmate within 10 minutes you're lucky; 20 minutes is more common, and expect another 20 minute delay between each inmate; and once I waited 1'20"! I am constantly having to ask the deputy at the podium to call up to the unit again and re-request for the inmate to be sent down, so much so that in Richmond I actually set a 10 minute timer on my computer to prompt me to keep asking. Their slow pace means a professional needs to plan for a lot of extra slack time to get any business done at the jail. If you are billing by the hour, it means the client is paying for dead time which is really unfortunate. If this problem were fixed I would give this jail a much higher rating.

Richmond city jail is awful ! The officers are disrespectful to the visitors & very unprofessional. I called one day to get some information about an inmate & instantly when the officer answered the phone she was rude, before I could finish my last sentence and say thank you she had hung the phone up in my face. Instead of working on how the jail looks how about trainging the Officer to be more polite to visitors.

Imperial County Jail (El Centro, California)

I am a professional visitor to the jail and my comments are from that perspective.

* The new medical staff contractor has been more responsive to request for information, and to receiving information back about inmates. Since this transition, the jail seems much more committed to the active treatment of mental illness, which alas is rampant in a jail that houses largely indigent city dwellers.

Hampton Roads Regional Jail (Portsmouth, Virginia) *

Warren County Regional Jail (Bowling Green, Kentucky)

THE BIG CON FOR PROFESSIONALS

Charles County Detention Center (La Plata, Maryland)

The appearance of the building has changed but there needs to be changes inside. The inmates need rehabilitation and the staff needs training on courtesy. The visitors should not be treated like they are criminals and just have to shut up and follow rules. I should not be waiting for an hour without communication when there is a problem with a visiting room.
