I have been a member of 2d Presbyterian Church for over 30 years, and my husband has been a member for over ten. Second Pres is an open and welcoming congregation in a beautiful historic building in downtown Richmond. The beautiful gothic sanctuary has recently been refurbished to stunning effect. Second Pres is a church that "walks the walk" with many mission endeavors in service to improve life in our city and in our world. The church has strong connections to ministries to the homeless and others on the margins of our society and to mission endeavors in Guatemala--that both my husband and I have seen and experienced! Sunday worship features a traditional service with thoughtful preaching, participation by lay readers who are members of the congregation, and a stellar music program. This church is a wonderful historic church in downtown Richmond, with beautiful architecture and a warm and welcoming congregation. It is a growing church with a lot of energy, with strong pastoral and lay leadership. The worship, music, and Christian education programs are outstanding.
Second Presbyterian is the heart of downtown Richmond and outreach and service to the community is what brought me to this congregation nine years ago. Within the church building, we house a wonderful child care center, the office for Assisting Families of Inmates and provide lunch on Mondays to those who need a meal. We partner with many organizations throughout the city to serve those in need. The congregation is open and welcoming to all!
We were originally drawn in by their Forum classes, where civic leaders would come and talk about community projects. We kept coming and stayed for the outstanding pastor and church staff, the welcoming community, and the many social mission programs they offer, such as Monday walk-in lunches every week, AFOI (Assisting Families Of Inmates) which transports family members to visit family who are in Virginia prisons every Saturday, CARITAS for the homeless, and others. This church also supports a Guatemalan community organization called CEDEPCA that empowers women in Guatemala. Visiting them to learn about their work was an unforgettable experience. This is a nice place to come and a nice community to be a part of every Sunday.
In my 10+ years with the church, I have personally found a great inspiration to be the mission programs of the church. Second Presbyterian is active in ministering to local Richmond needs, as well as national and international mission. I have been able to travel with groups from our church to Malawi and Guatemala, where 2nd Presbyterian actively supports partner organizations with their work to improve people's lives.
