3.5-4 stars for me. We came here after seeing it on one of the "popular restaurants" ad on Google. Great food and love the atmosphere. Love The pork chops, my wife had The chicken. The yams, man The yams were on point. The area is so nostalgic to me; here on vacation from Florida. Will defiantly revisit if we are back.
Being from the deep south, this was absolutely a breath of fresh air when it comes to southern food. The catfish is great and just the right amount of crispy. I also love that the cornbread isn't dry and just melts in your mouth. If you really want some good southern food I would say to go here.
We sat right next to the cake display while we engorged ourselves, so we compromised and took a piece of chocolate to go. The cake was moist and decadent, and had a hint of hot cocoa.
The restaurant itself was very welcoming, reminiscent of being in a family members home. I really enjoyed my meal here.
This is one popular spot, and justifiably so! During what I thought was an "off-time;" 2pm on a Saturday, we waited an hour for our table. Once seated the intimacy and relaxed pace of the restaurant offered an explanation. Our server was very enthusiastic and friendly, but our food was not quick to the table. Because we were starving at this point, we ordered fried shrimp and chicken wings I liked the house hot sauce that came with the chicken wings so I set it aside for the catfish I'd ordered as an entree.
TL;DR
Food is delicious. The staff are great. I came in around 11:30 a.m. and sat at the bar. The beef tips and rice were exactly what I wanted. My soft drink stayed full. Everyone was pleasant and efficient.
The entrees were AMAZING, soul food for days! I ordered the catfish, and it was hands down the best catfish I've ever had. It was light, crisp, and flaky and fried to perfection, not even slightly fishy (if you've had bad catfish you know what I'm talking about--and it was not that). The candied yams were dessert sweet and the mac-n-cheese was savory and delicious, topped with crispy bread crumbs. Others in my party had the ribs and fried chicken with greens, the bites I had of these were super yummy. And I like that you have the choice between light or dark meat with the chicken entree.
apps meh, entrees excellent, you must get some cake!, worth the LONG wait
This is a little gem of a restaurant in Richmond. I have been a few times over the past ten years. It has matured. It's a small place and almost always has a wait of about 30 to 45 minutes. The food is pretty good, unique. If you grew up on soul food then it will be about average I guess, I really enjoy southern food. I don't usually like service staff, but they were all friendly and responsive. The food comes quickly. Best of all - the prices! Most everything is less than $10 even for dinner.
